Rev has been up at The Hollow for over twenty-four hours. Between the four of us, we’ve tried every location spell we know, poured over books from Mack’s library, and read incantations until our eyes were so sore we could barely keep them open.

And still, we’ve failed to find Nova.

Mack is asleep now. I’m amazed he lasted as long as he did after Snow’s exertion last night. He’s exhausted and snoring, which he only usually does if he’s been drinking.

Luther is making coffee. Rev asks for hers black with no sugar. Usually, Luther might hit her with something smarmy like, “Because you’re sweet enough, right?” But even he isn’t in the mood for joking.

Rev yawns and rubs her face with her hands. The gesture smudges her eye makeup and leaves smoky black clouds like shadows on her cheeks.

When Luther brings over the coffee pot, we each take a mug and watch as it percolates.

I still feel nauseous. I woke from my dream in the car with a seasick sensation in my gut that hasn’t shifted since. I might have given into sleep before now if I hadn’t been so desperate not to relive the rest of the nightmare.

“I need to swim,” I announce, pushing the plunger even though the coffee hasn’t had nearly long enough to brew.

“Go. We’ll carry on here.” Luther holds out his mug and I pour.

“Carry on with what?” Rev asks, raising her eyebrows defensively when Luther glares at her. “We’ve exhausted every option. We’ve tried everything. Unless you know a more powerful mage or witch who can help us…” She glances at Mack, slumped in a chair near the open door. “The Bureau has entire tracking teams, don’t they? Surely, with your connections…”

Luther shakes his head. “Mack doesn’t want to involve them until he knows who’s side they’re on.”

Rev frowns.

I Interject. “What Luther means is that, sure, the Bureau could help us find Nova. But what will they do with her when they do?”

“Ah.” Rev lifts her coffee to her lips and sips it. “I hadn’t considered that.”

“We’re on our own,” I say, staring into my coffee. I know what I have to do, I just need to find the strength to do it. Looking up at Luther, I stand, down my coffee in one, and push my shoulders back. “I’m going for a swim. I need to clear my head. After that, we’ll jump.”

Luther doesn’t object. We’ve all known, for hours now, that this was where we’d end up. We’ve just been putting it off.

“Are you sure, Tanner?” Rev asks. Hesitantly, she adds, “Mack told me about… what happened to you. Are you sure you want to revisit that side of yourself?”

I study her face. Has she seen something? Does she know something that I don’t? Will one more visit to darkness push me to a place I can’t come back from?

“I’m sure.” I glance at Mack. “Don’t let him try to convince you there’s another option. We all know there isn’t, and I will not lose them because I’m too cowardly to do what needs to be done.
